Proprietary Materials

Two proprietary materials we offer are 2F3 outer shell, and TES (Thermal Enhancement System).

2F3 – A durable outer shell, that has low water absorption, takes repeated laundering better than other outer shells, and provides excellent thermal protection.

TES – Thermal Enhancement System – A Nomex mesh screen placed in the upper torso (upper back, upper chest, shoulders, and down the arms to the wrist), between the outer shell and moisture barrier. It gives an approximate 50% boost in thermal protection.

Thermal protection is of more value than thermal damage tolerance, when it comes to insulating a firefighter from the heat of a fire.

Pbi Matrix vs. 2F3

Note 1: Two samples of each outer shell fabric.

Note 2: Of each outer shell fabric, one of the two samples has TES.

Note 3: Material Combinations
Outer Shell: 2F3 or Pbi Matrix
TES: 2 of 4 samples
Moisture Barrier: Crosstech
Thermal Liner: Ultraflex

Note 4: Burn at 2 cal/cm2 (regular TPP temperature) for 17.5 seconds (which would equate a minimum TPP of 35.

Note 5: From visual indication, Pbi Matrix obviously has higher “Thermal Damage Tolerance” (outer shell looks better after it is burned).

Note 6:Burn samples with TES clearly provide much higher TPP (protection from the heat, about 50% extra) than samples without TES.

Note 7:2F3 sample (bottom left) provides a little better insulation from the heat than Pbi Matrix sample (upper right).
